What is this test?
The CT Calcium Score is a specialized, non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scan designed to measure the amount of calcium buildup within the walls of the coronary arteries — the vessels responsible for supplying blood to the heart muscle. Unlike traditional CT angiography, this test does not require contrast dye and provides a quick and non-invasive way to quantify coronary artery calcification, which is a key marker of atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of arteries due to plaque). The amount of calcium detected correlates with the risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) and future cardiac events.
What is it used for?
Who should get this test?
Preparation Required:
How is the procedure performed?
The patient lies comfortably on the CT table, usually supine. Electrodes may be placed on the chest to synchronize imaging with the heartbeat for clearer pictures. The scan itself takes approximately 5 minutes, during which low-dose X-ray images are captured to detect and measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. The process is quick, painless, and does not require intravenous contrast.
Risks & Safety:
The CT Calcium Score scan uses very low-dose radiation, significantly lower than a standard CT angiogram, and does not involve any contrast agents, eliminating risks of allergic reactions or kidney damage. The minimal radiation exposure is justified by the valuable information gained about cardiovascular risk and prevention.
Results:
The scan produces a calcium score, a numerical value that reflects the total amount of calcium detected in the coronary arteries. Scores are interpreted as follows:
Short Statement:
A quick, non-invasive CT scan that measures calcium deposits in coronary arteries, providing a crucial early indicator of heart disease risk and guiding preventive care.
