What is this test?
FibroScan is an advanced, non-invasive imaging test that uses ultrasound-based elastography to assess liver stiffness and fat content. By measuring how elastic or rigid the liver tissue is, it helps detect liver fibrosis (scarring) and steatosis (fat accumulation) without the need for a traditional biopsy. It is painless, quick, and requires no downtime.
What is it used for?

• Evaluating liver fibrosis in chronic conditions like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
• Monitoring progression of liver disease, including cirrhosis

Who should get this test?

• Individuals with chronic liver conditions or hepatitis (B or C)

• Anyone under long-term medications that can affect liver function

Preparation Required:

• Do not eat or drink anything (except water) for at least 3 hours before the test
• Wear loose-fitting clothing for easier access to the right upper abdomen
• Continue taking medications unless specifically advised otherwise by your physician

How is the procedure performed?
You will lie flat on your back with your right arm raised behind your head. A trained technician or doctor places a small ultrasound probe between your ribs on the right side. The device sends gentle, painless vibrations into the liver, measuring how fast the waves pass through the tissue. The procedure is completely non-invasive, lasts about 10–15 minutes, and provides immediate feedback.

FibroScan is a safe, radiation-free, and needle-free alternative to liver biopsy. It has no known side effects and is suitable for most individuals, including those who cannot undergo MRI or CT scans.
Results:
Results are expressed as numerical values:

• Liver stiffness is measured in kilopascals (kPa), indicating the degree of fibrosis.
• Fat content (in some models) is measured using CAP (Controlled Attenuation Parameter) in dB/m.
  A doctor will interpret your scores and determine whether additional tests or treatments are needed.
