A safe, non-invasive scan that measures the thickness of your carotid artery walls — an early and reliable marker of heart disease risk.
What is this test?
An Ultrasound Carotid Intimal Thickness (CIMT) test is a non-invasive imaging procedure that measures the thickness of the intima and media layers of the carotid artery walls using high-frequency sound waves. The carotid arteries are the major blood vessels in the neck supplying blood to the brain. The test assesses the early stages of atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) which may lead to cardiovascular diseases.
What is it used for?
Who should get this test?
Preparation Required:
How is the procedure performed?
You lie on your back while a gel is applied to your neck. A technician moves a handheld transducer over the carotid artery area to capture images. The process is painless, non-invasive, and typically lasts 15–30 minutes.
Risks & Safety:
The test is safe with no radiation exposure or known risks.
Results:
A radiologist or vascular specialist measures artery wall thickness and looks for plaque, helping your doctor assess cardiovascular risk.
