An abdominal x-ray is an imaging test to look at organs and structures in the abdomen. Organs include the liver, spleen, stomach, and intestines.
An abdominal X-ray is a painless, non-invasive and frequently recommended image diagnostics test.
It uses a small amount of radiation to take high-quality images of the abdominal cavity, which houses the liver, stomach, spleen, small & large intestines, and diaphragm.
The abdominal X-ray is most frequently performed to identify the causes of persistent abdominal pain and to locate blockages or holes in the intestines.
In many cases, a stomach X-ray is usually the first step in identifying abdominal issues with follow-up imaging tests, such as an abdominal CT scan and stomach ultrasound.
This image diagnostics test is also capable of detecting gallbladder and kidney stones as well as calcium deposits in the aorta.
X-ray uses radioactive beams that pass through the body, wherein the various body parts block the radiation, thus translating it into an image.
As the X-ray scan uses radiation for the procedure, it’s a common misconception that it can lead to cell mutations, causing cancer.
While radiation is indeed absorbed by the body, the radiation levels are extremely low, thus making it a safe image diagnostic test.
Caution: The abdominal X-ray is not recommended for pregnant women or those planning pregnancy due to the radiation emitted during the procedure.
