Description
Ultrasound KUB
What is this test?
The KUB ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. This scan helps assess the structure and function of your urinary tract, making it a first-line tool in diagnosing a wide range of urinary and renal issues. Unlike CT scans or X-rays, this test involves no radiation, making it safe and repeatable when needed.
What is it used for?
* Detecting kidney stones, cysts, tumors, or structural abnormalities
* Evaluating bladder wall thickness, bladder volume, and residual urine after voiding
* Identifying hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney due to urine buildup)
* Spotting ureteral obstructions or strictures
* Investigating recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
* Monitoring patients with chronic kidney disease or urinary tract abnormalities
* Evaluating causes of flank pain, hematuria (blood in urine), or lower abdominal discomfort
Who should get this test?
* Individuals with symptoms such as urinary pain, frequent UTIs, blood in urine, or trouble urinating
* Patients with a history of kidney stones or bladder issues
* Those being monitored for chronic kidney conditions
* Individuals with abnormal urinalysis or imaging requiring further evaluation
* Men with enlarged prostate or urinary retention issues
Preparation Required:
* A full bladder is usually required for optimal bladder imaging. You will be asked to drink approximately 3â4 glasses of water an hour before the test and avoid urinating until the scan is completed.
* In some cases, fasting for 6â8 hours may be advised, especially if other abdominal structures are being evaluated. Your doctor will provide specific instructions based on your clinical needs.
How is the procedure performed?
You will lie comfortably on an examination table. A warm, water-based gel is applied to the abdomen and lower pelvic area to ensure good contact between the skin and the transducer (the ultrasound probe). The technician will glide the probe across your skin to visualize the kidneys, ureters, and bladder in real-time.
The exam typically takes 15â30 minutes and is completely painless.
Risks & Safety:
This procedure is entirely safe, using no radiation, injections, or invasive instruments. It is ideal for children, pregnant women, and patients with radiation sensitivity.
Results:
A radiologist will review the images to check for abnormalities such as stones, tumors, cysts, or signs of infection. Results are generally available within 24 to 48 hours and are sent to your physician for follow-up care or further testing if needed.
Short Statement:
Focused imaging of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder â useful for detecting stones, infections, or urinary problems.
