What is this test?
Ultrasound of the lower abdomen is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the pelvic organs and structures in the lower abdomen. This includes the urinary bladder, uterus, ovaries in females, and the prostate gland in males. The test provides valuable insights into the size, shape, and condition of these organs, helping diagnose a variety of medical conditions.
What is it used for?
* Evaluating abnormalities of the bladder such as stones, tumors, or signs of urinary retention
* Assessing female pelvic organs including detecting ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, early pregnancy, or other gynecological conditions
* Examining the prostate gland in males to identify enlargement, nodules, or other prostate-related issues
* Investigating causes of lower abdominal or pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, urinary frequency, or difficulty urinating
* Monitoring known conditions or following up after treatment or surgery
Who should get this test?
* Patients experiencing lower abdominal or pelvic pain, bloating, or urinary symptoms such as frequency, urgency, or difficulty emptying the bladder
* Women suspected of having gynecological problems like ovarian cysts, fibroids, or early pregnancy complications
* Men with symptoms related to prostate enlargement, infections, or other prostate abnormalities
* Individuals with abnormal findings on physical pelvic exams or other imaging tests requiring further evaluation
Preparation Required:
* Patients are typically instructed to drink several glasses of water about an hour before the scan and avoid urinating to ensure the bladder is full, which provides better visualization of pelvic organs
* No special fasting or medication adjustments are usually necessary
* For certain detailed assessments, a transvaginal ultrasound (for women) or transrectal ultrasound (for men) may be recommended, which requires specific instructions your provider will explain
How is the procedure performed?
You will lie comfortably on an examination table, usually on your back. A warm, water-based gel is applied to your lower abdomen to allow smooth movement of the ultrasound transducer and to improve sound wave transmission. The technician or radiologist gently moves the transducer over your lower abdomen, capturing live images of your bladder, uterus, ovaries, or prostate. If a more detailed view is needed, a transvaginal probe (inserted gently into the vagina) or a transrectal probe (inserted into the rectum) may be used to obtain closer images of the pelvic organs. The entire procedure typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and is painless.
Risks & Safety:
Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, and painless imaging method. It uses sound waves rather than radiation, making it safe for all patients, including pregnant women. There are no known risks or side effects associated with this procedure.
Results:
The ultrasound images provide important information on the size, structure, and presence of abnormalities such as cysts, tumors, fluid collections, or inflammation in the pelvic organs. These findings help your healthcare provider diagnose conditions, plan treatments, or decide on further investigations.
Short Statement:
A safe, non-invasive ultrasound exam that evaluates your lower abdominal and pelvic organs â including bladder, uterus, ovaries, and prostate â ideal for investigating pain, urinary problems, or gynecological concerns.
