Description
Ultrasound Whole Abdomen
What is this test?
The Whole Abdomen Ultrasound is a comprehensive, non-invasive imaging test that evaluates both the upper and lower abdominal organs in a single session. It uses sound waves to generate real-time images, allowing physicians to visualize your internal organs and detect potential abnormalities across multiple systems â without radiation or invasive procedures.
What is it used for?
* Screening for abdominal masses, fluid accumulation (ascites), or structural abnormalities
* Evaluating organ enlargement, such as liver, spleen, kidneys, or pancreas
* Investigating abdominal pain, bloating, or distension
* Identifying gallstones, kidney stones, cysts, or tumors
* Monitoring chronic conditions like fatty liver, kidney disease, or gastrointestinal disorders
* Assessing bowel loops, lymph nodes, and vascular structures when indicated
* Serving as part of annual wellness checks or preoperative screening
Who should get this test?
* Individuals with non-specific or persistent abdominal symptoms
* Patients with a history of liver, kidney, pancreatic, or intestinal conditions
* People undergoing routine health evaluations or monitoring chronic illness
* Anyone with unexplained weight loss, fever, or abnormal blood test results
Preparation Required:
* Youâll usually be asked to fast for 6 to 8 hours before the scan to reduce gas and improve visibility of upper abdominal organs like the liver and pancreas.
* A full bladder is necessary for imaging the lower abdomen and pelvic organs â you may be asked to drink water an hour before the test and refrain from urinating.
How is the procedure performed?
Youâll lie comfortably on your back while a water-based gel is applied to your abdomen. The technician uses a handheld transducer to glide across the upper and lower regions, capturing images of all major abdominal structures. The procedure typically takes 20â40 minutes and is completely painless.
Risks & Safety:
Ultrasound is entirely safe â thereâs no radiation, contrast dye, or needles involved. Itâs suitable for all ages, including children and pregnant women.
Results:
A detailed report is generated, covering the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder, and reproductive organs (in women), along with any fluid or mass findings. The report is usually sent to your physician within 24 to 48 hours.
Short Statement:
A complete abdominal scan covering all major organs â ideal for general check-ups or investigating unexplained pain and digestive issues.
